State Representative Kyle Pierce has co-authored a bill aimed at standardizing the qualifications for candidates appointed to public office and refining the procedures for expulsion or vacancy of elected officials. The proposed legislation introduces a removal process for county commissioners who violate official duties or fail to perform their roles, requiring a two-thirds vote from both county commissioners and county council members.

"This is similar to the existing removal process currently in law for county council members, state legislators, and other offices," Pierce explained.

The bill mandates that candidates chosen for temporary appointments must meet the same qualifications as those elected to the office. Pierce emphasized that this requirement ensures consistency and accountability within local government.

Pierce expressed his commitment to strengthening public office procedures by providing a clear and fair method for removing officials when necessary. He encourages constituents to provide feedback on this legislation, underscoring the importance of community input in shaping measures that address local needs and priorities.

House Bill 1197 has successfully passed through the House Elections and Apportionment Committee and will proceed to the House for further evaluation. Sessions and committee meetings can be viewed live at iga.in.gov.
