State Representative Cory Criswell has introduced legislation aimed at increasing accessibility at school extracurricular activities, including athletic events. The proposed bill mandates that schools offer a cash payment option to attendees starting in July 2025.

Criswell, representing Middletown, emphasized the importance of providing convenient and accessible ways for families to participate in these events. "I've attended many of our school athletic events, and I know firsthand how important it is for families to have convenient and accessible ways to participate," he stated. "This legislation ensures that everyone, regardless of their payment preference, can enjoy the games and support our students."

A study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau indicates a trend towards cashless operations in school districts. House Bill 1064 seeks to address this by requiring schools to provide a cash payment option at all extracurricular activities and events where an admission fee is charged from July 1, 2025. This initiative aims particularly to assist those in rural areas with limited access to electronic payment systems.

"This bill is about ensuring equal access and convenience for all attendees at school events, no matter their preferred method of payment," Criswell explained. "We want every Hoosier to feel welcomed at our schools’ athletic events without unnecessary complications."

The legislation also intends to empower parental choice by allowing families more freedom in selecting schools that align with their child's needs across academic, extracurricular, and athletic domains. It includes provisions for fairness by removing prohibitions on transfers made for athletic reasons.

House Bill 1064 has passed the House Education Committee and will proceed to the House floor for further discussion. Additional information can be accessed through live sessions and committee meetings on iga.in.gov.
