State Representative Lori Goss-Reaves has introduced a new piece of legislation designed to expand educational opportunities in space science and technology for students throughout Indiana. The proposed House Bill 1207 seeks to establish the Space Science and Technology Grant Program, which aims to provide grants for developing innovative educational programs focused on atmospheric and outer space exploration.

Goss-Reaves emphasized the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as crucial pathways for the future. "Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are essential pathways for the future of our state and country," she stated. The bill is intended to offer students hands-on learning experiences in these fields. "By investing in the next generation of scientists and engineers, we are preparing them for a brighter future," she added.

The bill also proposes creating a Space Science and Technology Fund to financially support these initiatives. It will task the Indiana Department of Education with establishing criteria for awarding grants to eligible entities such as public, charter, and state-accredited nonpublic schools.

"This bill would introduce new possibilities for students, giving them access to learning experiences that could fuel their curiosity and encourage them to pursue careers in science and technology," said Goss-Reaves. She noted that equipping students with necessary tools and knowledge is vital in a rapidly changing world.

The proposal has garnered support from educators, school administrators, and STEM advocates who see potential in sparking interest among students towards careers in space exploration and technology.

House Bill 1207 has been referred to the House Education Committee for further consideration. Additional information can be accessed at iga.in.gov where sessions and committee meetings are available live.
