State Representative Beau Baird has put forward new legislation aimed at providing free access to Indiana state parks for veterans and Gold Star families. House Bill 1556, introduced by Baird, seeks to allow veterans complimentary entry to the state's parks.
"Our veterans have made tremendous sacrifices to serve and protect this country, and providing them with free access to Indiana's state parks is a small way we could show our appreciation," stated Baird. "My legislation would ensure those who've given so much can enjoy the beauty of our state with their families more easily."
Additionally, Baird is co-authoring House Bill 1422, which proposes free park admission for Gold Star family members. "Gold Star families have endured unimaginable loss in service to our nation, and this bill offers a meaningful way to honor their loved ones' sacrifice," said Baird. "By granting them free state park admission, we hope to provide them with a place for reflection, healing and connection."
The National Park Service currently provides free passes for U.S. military personnel, Gold Star families, and U.S. military veterans to national parks and other federal recreational lands. The proposed bills aim to extend similar benefits at the state level in Indiana.
Both HB 1556 and HB 1422 are now under review by the House Natural Resources Committee. Further information on these legislative efforts can be found on the Indiana General Assembly's website.
