Josh Goodman, the Director of Bands at Arsenal Tech, is featured in this week's IPS Employee Spotlight. He discusses his career path, involvement with the IPS All-City Marching Band, and the creation of the Freddie Hubbard Memorial Jazz Fest.

Goodman is in his fourth year with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), where he also manages the IPS All-City Winter Percussion Ensemble and Winter Guard. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, he credits inspiring band directors at Fairfield High School for sparking his interest in music education. This led him to study at the University of Louisville, where he performed in marching and pep bands. In 2021, Goodman earned a Master’s degree in School Leadership and Administration from the University of Indianapolis.

Reflecting on his career choice, Goodman said: "I discovered my passion for urban education while at the University of Louisville." Despite having taught in various settings, he felt drawn to urban education environments.

When asked why he chose IPS, Goodman expressed enthusiasm about Tech's jazz heritage as Freddie Hubbard’s alma mater. He noted that students' dedication inspires him: "Our students work incredibly hard... They inspire me to give my best."

Goodman described his experience at IPS as unique due to its musical legacy. "Building a robust music program without band opportunities at every middle school has been a challenge," he stated but remained optimistic about future developments.

A particularly rewarding moment for Goodman was last year's All-City Marching Band show celebrating IPS jazz legends. After a performance, an audience member expressed how meaningful it was to her. "It underscored how essential arts and culture are in our community," Goodman remarked.

For new educators, Goodman advises: "Don’t hesitate to ask questions... prioritize what’s best for students."
