GLVC Recognizes 2021-22 Team Academic All-Conference Recipients
The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced 173 men’s and women’s teams Monday as recipients of the 2021-22 Team Academic All-GLVC Award, it was announced on Monday. The GLVC recognizes each team from full-time and associate member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year. The total of 173 honorees did not reach to 2019-20 record-breaking total of 207 but did surpass the previous record from 2018-19 of 152.
The University of Indianapolis women’s golf program registered the Conference’s highest team GPA during the 2021-22 academic year with a 3.94. Placing second overall was the University of Illinois Springfield women’s tennis team at 3.89, followed by the Indianapolis women’s tennis squad at 3.84. The Rockhurst University’s women’s volleyball (3.83) and softball (3.82), as well as the Truman State University women’s golf program (3.82) rounded out the top five.
The GLVC had 11 league members with 10 or more teams at or above a 3.30, which was just shy of the Conference-record 13 set in 2019-20 and matched last year. Maryville again had the highest number of sports meeting the distinguished 3.30 standard with 16, but it was just shy of its own Conference-best mark from 2019-20 and 2020-21 of 17.
Four GLVC members either maintained or increased their totals from a year ago, and, of the 173 honored programs, 122 came from women’s sports with 51 from the men’s side.
Four league sports – women’s golf (13), women’s soccer (15), women’s swimming & diving (9), and volleyball (15) – saw all their teams above the 3.30 mark. Among the other notables, women’s basketball (13), women’s bowling (5), women’s cross country (13), softball (13), and women’s tennis (12) had all but two programs meet the threshold.
Of the 122 women’s sports, which include indoor and outdoor track and field as one, eight had more than 80 percent of its participating schools achieve the GPA milestone, including golf (13/13, 100%), women’s soccer (15/15, 100%), swimming & diving (9/9, 100%), volleyball (15/15, 100%), basketball (13/15, 86.6%), cross country (13/15, 86.6%), softball (13/15, 86.6%), and tennis (12/14, 85.7%).
On the men’s side, 10 of 13 (76.9%) tennis teams and eight of the 13 (61.5%) golf squads earned the honor, followed by cross country (8/15, 53.3%), baseball (5/15, 50%), swimming & diving (5/10, 50%), soccer (7/15, 46.6%), track & field (5/14, 37.5%), lacrosse (1/7, 0.14%), football (1/8, 0.12%), and basketball (1/15, 0.06%) to round out the 51 programs.
In the previous five seasons, women’s tennis was the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list; however, this season it was women’s golf with four. Women’s basketball, women’s soccer, softball, and women’s tennis followed with two, while the remaining four schools were led by women’s bowling, women’s cross country, women’s track & field, and volleyball.
