UIndy Captures Third-Straight GLVC Women’s Tennis Title

In a rematch of the 2021 title contest, No. 12th-ranked and the East’s top seed University of Indianapolis swept 39th-ranked and the West’s top seed Southwest Baptist University, 4-0, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri, to claim its league-best 13th title and third in a row.

The No. 3 doubles squad of Isabella Dunlap and Sofia Sharanova were first to finish for Indianapolis, taking a 6-3 win just minutes before Southwest Baptist’s No. 2 duo of Ghada Dirninger and Elsa Pascual won 6-3. The doubles point came down to the No. 1 position, which took just a few additional minutes to complete with UIndy grabbing the 6-4 victory to take a 1-0 lead, heading into singles action.

A 2-0 lead was earned by Kristina Lagoda at No. 4 singles thanks to her 6-1, 6-1 win over Dirninger in just under an hour. Lea Cakarevic pushed the Greyhounds’ lead to 3-0 just three minutes later, nearly sweeping SBU’s Giselle Garcia 6-1, 6-0. At No. 5, Arina Amaning collected the fourth and final point with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Bearcats’ Lola Cincunegui. UIndy was also ahead in the second set at singles 1, while singles 2 was tied after two sets but had SBU’s Paula Ballesteros up 2-1 in the third.

At the conclusion of the Championship, UIndy head coach Malik Tabet was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the fifth time. His Bearcats, the GLVC automatic qualifier, now await the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday, May 3 at 8 PM ET to determine their Regional fate. The 2022 NCAA Division II Championships will be played May 17-21 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte, Fla., following the preliminary rounds on May 6-7.
