U.S. Senators Todd Young from Indiana and Jacky Rosen of Nevada have put forward the Healthcare Cybersecurity Act, aiming to enhance cybersecurity in the U.S. health care and public health sectors. The proposed legislation seeks collaboration between the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This partnership is intended to improve cybersecurity measures and provide resources to non-federal entities regarding cyber threat indicators and appropriate defense mechanisms.

A significant aspect of the bill includes appointing a special liaison from CISA to HHS, focusing on supporting cybersecurity for health care and public health sector entities.

Senator Young highlighted the pressing need for this initiative by stating, "In recent years, hospitals and other health care facilities in Indiana and across America have experienced a dramatic increase in cyberattacks." He added that this bipartisan bill aims to take essential steps toward strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure, ultimately protecting patients' personal data.

Echoing these concerns, Senator Rosen remarked on the impact of cyberattacks on America's healthcare system: "For years, America’s health care system has faced devastating cyberattacks that have exposed patients’ data, jeopardized access to care, and hurt local and rural medical facilities across Nevada." She emphasized her commitment to working with both parties to enhance cybersecurity measures through increased coordination and resource availability for hospitals.

The full text of the proposed legislation is available for review.
