Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $4.3 million in state funding to local communities for road and bridge projects, as announced by State Representatives Karen Engleman and Zach Payne. This initiative is part of a broader effort where 245 Indiana communities will receive more than $200 million in state matching grants this year.
"The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program is a tremendous partnership between state and local government," stated Engleman. "This funding helps local communities move forward faster on needed upgrades to ensure the safety of our infrastructure."
The program supports projects such as road reconstruction, bridge preservation, and intersection improvements. Indiana was recently recognized by Consumer Affairs as having the best overall road conditions in the nation, highlighting low traffic fatality rates and high-quality roads.
Local recipients of the grant include Charlestown with $1 million, Clark County receiving $324,212, Georgetown awarded $331,919, Greenville getting $148,782, Jeffersonville with a grant of $1.4 million, Sellersburg receiving $92,681, and Utica awarded $889,915.
Payne explained that smaller municipalities are required to provide a 25 percent match in local funds to qualify for funding, while larger communities must provide a 50 percent match. The program mandates that half of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with populations of 50,000 or less. Since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has distributed over $2 billion for local road and bridge improvements.
"Our transportation infrastructure is invaluable to everyday life," said Payne. "This funding will help our local communities get the resources needed to maintain the high-quality roads and bridges that Hoosier drivers deserve."
