Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program has allocated over $6.9 million to local communities for road and bridge projects, as announced by Porter County legislators. This initiative provides financial support for infrastructure improvements such as road reconstruction and bridge preservation. In 2025, 245 Indiana communities will benefit from more than $200 million in state matching grants.
State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) emphasized the importance of these grants for smaller communities needing assistance with road maintenance. "It's encouraging to see local areas receiving the funds they need to move forward on projects," he said.
Consumer Affairs recently ranked Indiana as the top state in the nation for overall road conditions, highlighting low traffic fatality rates and quality roads.
The grant recipients in the area include Hebron with $1.5 million, Ogden Dunes with $259,693, Portage with $1.5 million, Porter with $541,331, Porter County with $1.5 million, Town of Pines with $159,817, and Valparaiso with $1.5 million.
"Roads and bridges are integral to the growth of our towns and cities," stated State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point). She added that these grants enable communities to undertake significant projects enhancing accessibility and opportunity.
State Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) explained that smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds to qualify for funding, while larger ones must offer a 50 percent match. He noted that since its inception in 2016, Community Crossings has awarded over $2 billion for local infrastructure improvements.
"Roads and bridges are the arteries connecting major cities to rural areas," Soliday remarked. "By investing in improvements and new infrastructure projects, we are ensuring the safety and sustainability of Indiana's roadways."
