The Indiana House of Representatives has voted in favor of a bill aimed at protecting veterans from exploitation during the benefits application process. The legislation, authored by State Representative Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne), seeks to address issues where veterans are overcharged or misled by those assisting them with benefit claims.
House Bill 1670 proposes the creation of the Veteran Empowerment Act. This act is designed to enhance oversight of individuals and organizations that provide assistance to veterans in Indiana. According to Rep. Judy, there have been instances where attorneys and other actors take advantage of veterans by charging excessive fees or taking a portion of their disability compensation.
"Time and again veterans are misled by unqualified people when seeking help with their benefits," said Judy. "This bill is about protecting veterans and ensuring that they get the services they deserve."
Under the proposed legislation, any entity offering assistance would need to meet certain qualifications to represent veterans effectively. Furthermore, those providing advice or consulting services for a fee would be prohibited from using international call centers for processing personal information. They also would not be allowed to use a veteran's personal log-in details without permission and must undergo background checks before accessing sensitive information.
House Bill 1670 received bipartisan support in the House and will now proceed to the Senate for further evaluation. For more details on this legislative process or to watch live sessions, visit iga.in.gov.
