State Representative Shane Lindauer has put forward House Bill 1618 to designate the persimmon as Indiana's official state fruit. This initiative follows an essay written by students from Jasper Elementary School, who advocated for the fruit's recognition.

Lindauer emphasized the educational value of this project, stating, "With persuasive writing being a key focus in fourth grade, this opportunity gave students a chance to engage civically while developing valuable skills." He praised the students for their efforts, noting, "The students of Jasper Elementary did a fantastic job researching and presenting why the persimmon should be designated Indiana's state fruit."

The students presented four main arguments supporting their proposal: Indiana currently lacks a state fruit; persimmons are native to the region; they offer health benefits; and they could positively impact Indiana's economy.

Recently, these students traveled to Indianapolis to present their case before the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee. More information on this bill and other legislative proposals can be found at iga.in.gov.
