U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand and Chairman Rick Scott convened a hearing titled “Improving Wellness Among Seniors: Setting a Standard for the American Dream.” The session focused on health, safety, and the benefits of social engagement and work in later life.

Senator Gillibrand expressed enthusiasm about her role as ranking member for the 119th Congress, acknowledging previous committee leaders Senators Casey and Braun. She congratulated Senator Scott on his chairmanship and emphasized her commitment to bipartisanship in addressing issues faced by older adults and people with disabilities.

Gillibrand outlined her priorities, including lowering prescription drug costs, protecting against financial scams, and safeguarding essential programs like Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. The hearing aimed to discuss promoting wellness among seniors through accessible housing, financial security, and community engagement.

“This conversation is about making sure that we are creating and supporting a society that gives people the tools to live and age well,” Gillibrand stated. She highlighted various resources such as nutrition assistance programs, Area Agencies on Aging, Centers for Independent Living, supportive housing programs, Medicare and Medicaid, and Social Security as crucial tools for wellness.

Gillibrand concluded by expressing her eagerness to hear from witnesses on improving wellness for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
