State Representative Julie McGuire has introduced a bill aimed at providing tuition support for military reservists in Indiana. The proposed legislation seeks to establish a fund that would cover full tuition costs for up to four years for Hoosiers serving as reserves in the U.S. Armed Forces who are attending state educational institutions.
According to the proposal, the Reservist Tuition Supplement Fund would be available to reservists pursuing either an associate or bachelor's degree. "The Reservist Tuition Supplement Fund is a way to give back to those who are willing to give their lives for this country," McGuire stated. She emphasized that this initiative could significantly benefit reservists, their families, and Indiana communities.
Reservists already receiving financial aid could also benefit from the fund, as it would cover any remaining tuition balance. To qualify, recipients must maintain a satisfactory cumulative grade point average as determined by their respective schools.
The program, if enacted, is projected to offer approximately $1.5 million in grants annually to over 300 Hoosier reservists.
House Bill 1203 has been assigned to the House Committee on Education for further consideration. Interested parties can follow session and committee activities live and access legislation details at iga.in.gov.
