Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has initiated the IPS Alumni Spotlight to honor its graduates and share their experiences. This initiative aims to highlight the achievements and personal interests of former students, emphasizing that each graduate follows a unique path from which others can learn.
Recently, IPS featured Chilnille Milbrooks, a 1994 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School. Milbrooks pursued a career as a nurse practitioner, motivated by her desire to form meaningful relationships with patients and their families. She currently works at IU Health Physicians in Indianapolis. Outside her professional life, she spends time with family, mentors minority high school students, attends Indiana Fever and Pacers games, and serves as a Girl Scout troop leader.
Milbrooks holds a Master of Science in Nursing from Indiana University School of Nursing, specializing as a family nurse practitioner. She is affiliated with the Coalition of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Indiana and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
When asked about how IPS influenced her educational foundation and career aspirations, Milbrooks stated: "As a student in health professions magnet it solidified that a career in health care is what I wanted."
Recalling memorable moments at IPS, she mentioned Mr. Ellis, her sixth-grade teacher at School 90: "He always told us to aim for the moon and we will land among the stars."
Milbrooks highlighted skills gained through IPS's health professions magnet program: "By being in the health professions magnet I became a CNA which was the start of my nursing journey. Also through the magnet I learned interview skills which has helped me land almost every job I have ever applied for."
Regarding her connection with the IPS community today, she shared: "Through my employer I have students from Crispus Attucks shadow me in the summer."
