State Representative Mike Karickhoff of Kokomo presented the Sagamore of the Wabash award to Rick Smith on Thursday, recognizing his over 30 years of service at the Community Foundation. Smith's tenure included 27 years on the board and three terms as board chair. Under his leadership, initiatives like Lilly Endowment's Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow and a volunteer investment group increased the foundation's assets from under $12 million to more than $85 million. He also established a Senior Advisory Committee to ensure continuity within the organization.

Karickhoff praised Smith, stating, "Rick's values of integrity and hard work have not only shaped his career but also inspired his family and others to give back to our community." He highlighted Smith's role in economic development during the 2008 financial crisis and his involvement in creating the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance, which helped revitalize Kokomo.

Smith has served on several boards, including those of the Kokomo Country Club, Kokomo Rescue Mission, Rotary Club of Kokomo, Howard Regional Health Foundation, and Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance. Since 1984, he has owned Smith Financial, where he has earned prestigious designations and mentored professionals.

The Sagamore of the Wabash award dates back to the 1940s when it was created by former Governor Ralph Gates. It is considered the highest honor given by Indiana's governor to individuals who have made significant contributions to the state.
