In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the Cheer Squad at William McKinley School 39 initiated a relief effort to assist those affected by the storm. The squad, under the guidance of sponsor Kaylen Rodgers, organized a drive that collected over 300 essential items for victims in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Principal Deana Harger-Perry highlighted the squad's commitment to community service. "Our Cheer Squad wanted to be more than just a team," she said. "Ms. Rodgers has worked hard to emphasize community service, and this relief drive gave our students the chance to do something meaningful for others in need."
The initiative was promoted through fliers and school announcements, with an added element of competition among homerooms to encourage donations. The class contributing the most earned an extra recess.
“It was amazing to see our students excited about helping others,” Harger-Perry remarked. “At the end, the cheerleaders were so proud of the many boxes they filled, and they’re already talking about their next project.”
McKinley School 39 emphasizes a culture of service rooted in mutual respect as part of its community agreements. This value encourages students to respect not only each other but also their broader community and environment.
“Service initiatives like this teach our students to care for one another and their surroundings,” Harger-Perry stated. “Whether it’s through a relief drive or cleaning up our playground, we want our students to grow up understanding the importance of helping others.”
