Congressman Jefferson Shreve, who represents Indiana’s 5th Congressional District, made several statements on social media regarding the potential government shutdown and recent legislative actions by House Republicans.

On September 30, 2025, Shreve announced his intention to forgo his salary in the event of a government shutdown. In a post, he stated: " I won’t take a paycheck if Washington shuts down. Instead, I’ll donate that pay to the Johnson County Boys & Girls Club in Franklin. Hoosiers deserve a government that works for them — not political games."

The following day, October 1, 2025, Shreve commented on legislative efforts to prevent a shutdown: "House Republicans passed legislation to keep the government open and our troops paid. Unfortunately, some in Congress chose politics over solutions. We’re focused on governing responsibly for the American people. "

On October 3, 2025, Shreve posted a link without additional commentary: "https://t.co/wKfwGMOKJu"

Members of Congress are required by law to receive their salaries even during a federal government shutdown unless they choose to voluntarily return or donate their pay. This issue has prompted some lawmakers in recent years to pledge donating their earnings during periods when normal government operations are suspended.

A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions funding federal agencies and programs. During such times, many federal employees may be furloughed and non-essential services paused until an agreement is reached.
