André Carson, U.S. Congressman representing Indiana’s 7th district since 2008, used his social media platform this week to comment on recent developments in Congress and highlight local events related to immigration.
On September 23, Carson criticized Republican leadership regarding an impending government shutdown, stating: "UPDATE: Republican leadership just canceled votes for next week, even though that’s when government funding expires – and they have no plan. House Republicans say they would rather shut down the government than come back to Washington to do their jobs." He posted this message as a response to ongoing negotiations over federal funding.
In a follow-up post on the same day, Carson described Democratic efforts amid the budget uncertainty: "Democrats are working to save healthcare, get servicemembers and federal workers their checks on time, and avoid disruptions to hardworking Americans."
Turning attention to local matters on September 24, Carson noted the naturalization of new citizens at a ceremony in Indianapolis: "Yesterday, 92 Hoosiers took their oath of citizenship at the Indiana State Museum. America is built by immigrants. I’ll keep fighting to create more pathways to citizenship for those who have lived, worked, and given to this country. We are all stronger for it."
Carson has represented Indiana’s 7th district since succeeding Julia Carson in 2008 and previously served on the Indianapolis City-County Council from 2007 to 2008. Born in Indianapolis in 1974 and currently residing there, he graduated from Concordia University Wisconsin with a BA in 2003.
