Huntington Catholic School and Huntington County Community School Corporation have been awarded over $33,000 for safety improvements through Indiana's Secured School Safety Grant Program. The funding is part of a statewide initiative that distributed $27 million in matching grants to 494 schools this year.
State Representative Lorissa Sweet (R-Wabash) noted the significance of these funds for local educational institutions. "Local schools can use this grant funding in a variety of ways to protect students and staff," Sweet said. "School safety will always be a top priority for lawmakers."
Of the total, Huntington Catholic School received $7,094, while Huntington County Community School Corporation was granted $26,799. According to Sweet, these funds can support various needs such as resource officers, security equipment and technology, active event warning systems, threat assessments, and programs supporting students and parents.
This year’s grants are part of broader legislative efforts that also included moving the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security to streamline operations and enhance resources available to schools.
Since its launch in 2013, Indiana has invested more than $214 million into school safety through this matching grant program. More information about the Secured School Safety Grant Program is available on Indiana’s school safety hub at https://www.in.gov/schoolsafety.
