Newton County schools have received over $6,000 in state funding for safety improvements through Indiana's Secured School Safety Grant Program. The program, supported by State Representatives Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) and Matt Commons (R-Williamsport), aims to enhance school security across the state.
This year, the Indiana legislature allocated a total of $27 million in matching grants to 494 schools. Lawmakers also passed legislation transferring the Office of School Safety to the Department of Homeland Security. This move is intended to centralize safety efforts and provide more resources for schools.
"Schools need to be equipped to respond quickly in emergency situations and ensure student and staff safety," Aylesworth said. "These grants assist schools with updates on safety technology and systems, threat prevention plans and more."
North Newton School Corporation received $4,162, while South Newton School Corporation was awarded $2,312 as part of this round of funding.
According to Commons, these funds can be used for a variety of needs including support for resource officers, new equipment and technology, active event warning systems, threat assessments, and programs supporting students and parents.
"Students and teachers should feel safe at school," Commons said. "This additional funding helps educators update security measures to ensure they're equipped to keep everyone safe."
Since its launch in 2013, Indiana has invested over $214 million into school safety through state matching grants. More information about the Secured School Safety Grant Program is available at https://www.in.gov/schoolsafety.
