State Rep. Matt Lehman, co-chair of Indiana's Artificial Intelligence Task Force, recently met with other lawmakers and industry professionals to discuss how artificial intelligence is currently being used in state government and what it could mean for the state's future.
The task force aims to examine how AI is implemented by both state agencies and private companies, with a focus on improving public services through technology while ensuring data privacy.
"Artificial intelligence isn't something the legislature can address with a single bill," Lehman said. "This will be an ongoing conversation that will require us to revisit, adjust and refine our approach as the technology progresses."
During the meeting, representatives from the Indiana Office of Technology and the Management Performance Hub presented updates on their AI initiatives. These included "Ask Indiana," a chatbot feature available on the state's website, and "Pivot," a tool from the Department of Workforce Development designed to offer personalized career and training advice.
Lehman emphasized AI's potential benefits for manufacturing and workforce development in Indiana but also pointed out that policies should encourage innovation while maintaining worker protections. He stated that digital literacy, cybersecurity, and human oversight are key considerations in forming effective AI policy.
"Indiana has been the backbone of American manufacturing, and AI can make us even stronger," Lehman said. "Our responsibility is to ensure innovation creates opportunities for Hoosiers, rather than displacement."
