Brett W. Townsend, a seasoned educator at Harshman Middle School, shared insights about his career in education and his contributions to the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) district. His journey into education was influenced by his parents, both public school teachers, and his music teachers during his formative years. Initially pursuing music education at Ball State University, Townsend eventually found his calling in education after earning a degree in anthropology.

Townsend's career at IPS began following a job fair in 2015. He has primarily served as an inclusion teacher for eighth graders and recently transitioned to seventh-grade inclusion and resource supports. Additionally, he has coached various sports teams and now holds the position of assistant athletic director at Harshman.

When asked about working at IPS, Townsend said: "I work at IPS because I have administrators and colleagues whom I trust." He emphasized the support he receives to meet the needs of students with complex academic and behavioral challenges.

Reflecting on differences from previous roles, Townsend noted that prior experiences left him feeling disconnected due to not being an employee of any specific school building. At IPS, however, he feels integrated into the school community.

Education holds personal significance for Townsend as it challenges individuals to grow through openness and investment in others. Influenced by family traditions and inspiring teachers like Dan Pritchett, Tim Kopf, and Hans Sturm, he continues to find fulfillment in teaching.

One notable achievement was helping a student overcome an Emotional Disabilities label through comprehensive support systems at Harshman. This experience marked a career highlight for Townsend as it showcased the positive impact of collaborative efforts on student development.

On staying motivated daily, Townsend stated: "My constant goal as an educator is to be responsive, not reactive." He praised the Rebuilding Stronger initiative for reopening traditional middle schools within IPS—a move he believes will better prepare students for high school success compared to private options.

For new educators joining IPS, Townsend advises seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues who maintain positivity towards students and peers: "They will naturally help you practice the same growth mindset we want to instill in our students."
