U.S. Senator Todd Young from Indiana, along with Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas and over 20 other senators, have called on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to update broadcast ownership rules. The group believes that modernizing these regulations is necessary for local broadcasters to remain competitive against large media corporations.

"The fast-evolving media marketplace has made broadcast ownership regulations in urgent need of modernization," the senators stated in their letter. They argue that by updating these restrictions, the FCC can enable broadcasters to maintain their critical role in American democracy, support local journalism, and serve local communities and public interests.

Among those joining Senators Young and Moran are Senators Ted Budd, James Lankford, Cynthia Lummis, Tim Sheehy, Shelley Moore Capito, Kevin Cramer, John Curtis, Marsha Blackburn, Tommy Tuberville, Dan Sullivan, John Barrasso, John Cornyn, Chuck Grassley, Steve Daines, Pete Ricketts, John Boozman, Susan Collins, Joni Ernst, John Hoeven, and Tim Scott.

The letter emphasizes that current regulations were established in the 1940s and have seen only minor changes since then. These rules do not adequately address the challenges posed by digital platforms and social media giants. Local broadcasters face increasing competition for audience attention and advertising revenue from major technology companies.

The senators highlight that technology firms have changed how Americans access news and entertainment. Despite this shift in media consumption habits threatening local broadcasters' survival prospects due to regulatory constraints hindering their growth potential or operational efficiency gains through mergers or expansions - which could otherwise help them compete effectively against unregulated global Big Tech competitors - they continue providing trusted reporting services vital during crises like public safety threats or severe weather events when newspapers disappear nationwide at alarming rates.

They urge swift action from the FCC to level the playing field for local broadcasters by modernizing ownership rules so these entities can invest more resources into journalism while retaining
