The Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) announced the 2026 Teachers of the Year on May 7, marking the occasion with surprise celebrations. Two educators were recognized for their significant contributions both inside and outside the classroom.

The honorees are Molli Powers from Benjamin Harrison School 2 in the elementary category (grades K-6) and Luc Sproles from William Penn Middle School in the secondary category (grades 7-12).

Powers, a third-grade teacher, was celebrated by her students and colleagues for her student-centered teaching approach. Principal Amy Wackerly described her as providing "unwavering support for all students" and praised her ability to handle challenges positively.

Sproles, a STEM teacher, was honored for his leadership despite being only two years into his career. He has been instrumental in reshaping the school's STEM program and sponsors IPS's first middle school robotics team. Principal Chelsey Thompson commended him as an "excellent educator" and "wonderful human."

IPS Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson highlighted both educators' passion and care, noting their daily impact on students' lives.

“These teachers are changing lives every day,” said Johnson. “Their impact will ripple through our schools and communities for years to come.”
