Every summer, thousands of recent high school graduates prepare to enter college life by securing deposits, picking courses, and packing for the start of their academic journey. However, a significant number of students from low-income backgrounds face a different reality. Despite being eligible and even enrolled in college, many of these students do not show up in the fall due to a phenomenon called “summer melt.” According to the Department of Education, “a large portion of students from low-income communities will have a very different summer experience.”
Statistics reveal that annually over one million high school graduates do not pursue their expected postsecondary education. In fact, one in five graduates who plan to attend college never begins their studies.
To combat this issue, IPS Class of 2025 is offering support through its Future Centers, providing assistance with college planning post-graduation. From May 28th to July 19th, during school hours, IPS College Specialists and School Counselors are available to help graduates make their final transitions into their post-secondary paths. They are focusing on supporting graduates in enrollment, employment, and enlistment.
Students are encouraged to complete the IPS Senior Survey accurately to access the additional support available. Future Center Associates and school counselors will reach out through texts, phone calls, emails, and in-person meetings to guide students through college enrollment, job searches, or military enlistment.
