Arsenal Technical High School has gained the prestigious Early College High School endorsement from the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL) at the University of Indianapolis. This endorsement recognizes Arsenal Tech's program that provides students the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and various college credits.
This achievement follows the recognition of Crispus Attucks as the first Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) district-managed school to obtain this status.
Principal JR Shelt acknowledged the effort of the entire Arsenal Tech community. He stated, "The entire Arsenal Tech community shares in this major award — a tremendous achievement that reflects the hard work and dedication of so many over the past three years." Shelt gave special recognition to Assistant Principal Patrick Kennison for his dedication to the student group.
The school's Early College program has been successful, with students earning 1,650 college credits during the 2023–2024 academic year, saving families over $326,814 in tuition. In the Fall of 2024, students earned 2,773 credits, leading to $540,402 in savings. The program involves nearly 100 students and support from over 30 credentialed teachers.
The success rate for the 2022 cohort is notable, with 79% of graduates continuing to college, surpassing the state average of 53%.
Early College programs help students earn college credit while in high school. Arsenal Tech's program was evaluated on eight core principles, such as promoting a college-going culture. Their endorsement process involved preparing a portfolio and an evaluation by a CELL team.
Statewide, as of the 2023-2024 school year, 60 high schools have received the Early College High School endorsement.
