Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has introduced the IPS Alumni Spotlight, a platform to showcase the diverse and inspiring journeys of its graduates. The spotlight aims to celebrate former students by highlighting their experiences, achievements, and personal interests. Dr. Ernest Evans, an alumnus of Arsenal Technical High School class of 2008, recently shared his journey that began in Indiana's largest school district.

Dr. Evans pursued higher education with a bachelor's degree in sociology from IUPUI, followed by a master's degree from Indiana University Bloomington, and later a doctorate from Howard University. Currently, he is the Director of the Indiana University Indianapolis TRIO Upward Bound Program, focusing on supporting students' educational paths. With over a decade of experience in higher education, Dr. Evans has dedicated his career to Student Affairs and College Access.

Reflecting on his time at IPS, Dr. Evans said: "At IPS I was given the tools and resources that I needed to be successful. I was challenged and supported by the staff and faculty." He emphasized the impact of participating in the TRIO Upward Bound Program during high school on his college preparation.

Dr. Evans also credited his guidance counselor at IPS: "My guidance counselor in high school, Dr. Vernetta Robinson, always supported and believed in me." He expressed gratitude for her support throughout his college application process.

His experiences at IPS have influenced both his personal and professional development: "My time in IPS taught me the value of hard work which has translated into my professional career."

Staying connected with the IPS community is important for Dr. Evans as he recruits students for his pre-college program: "Professionally I am connected to IPS as I work with and recruit students to participate in my pre-college program."

As Director of the IU Indianapolis TRIO Upward Bound Program, Dr. Evans is involved in initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for current IPS students: "This program works to provide the knowledge and resources to get first-generation and low-income students to and through college."
