Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) highlights the contributions of Jennifer Berry, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway Director, in their latest Employee Spotlight feature. With over 30 years in education, Berry's journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Western Michigan University in 1993. Her career took root as a special education teacher at Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan.

Berry later pursued advanced studies at Indiana University Bloomington, earning her School Administration and Special Education Director Licensure in 2008. Now in her sixth year at IPS, she oversees CTE pathways across district-managed schools, focusing on providing students with real-world experiences through summer jobs, internships, and youth apprenticeships.

"Education runs in my family—my mom was an elementary school teacher," Berry shares about her inspiration to enter the field. She believes passionately in high-quality CTE pathways that offer college credits and industry certifications. "These opportunities open doors for students," she explains.

Reflecting on her role at IPS compared to previous positions, Berry notes that this is her first district-level position after spending much of her career directly interacting with students at middle and high schools. "I love being able to amplify the great work happening in our schools," she states.

For Berry, education is a lifelong journey inspired by family members who were also educators. The rewarding moments come when seeing students thrive: "Whether it’s a partnership like the IU Health Fellowship or a paid apprenticeship... knowing that students are gaining real-world experience... is what makes this work so fulfilling."

Berry approaches her job by staying engaged with teachers, counselors, and students: "That’s what fuels my motivation." Regarding IPS's Rebuilding Stronger initiative, she praises its preparation of students for high school rigor through expanded access to STEM and other programs.

To new educators joining IPS, Berry advises getting connected with professional organizations: "These groups offer valuable opportunities for professional development... that can help you grow."
