The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) is set to take place from March 3 to March 14, 2025. This state-required assessment aligns with the Indiana Academic Standards and is designed to ensure that students can read by the end of third grade, in compliance with state law requirements HEA 1367 and SEA 1. The test evaluates foundational reading skills, emphasizing word recognition and comprehension.

IREAD comprises multiple-choice questions only, with no requirement for written or verbal responses. It is untimed, allowing students to complete each section at their own pace over two to three days. The computer-adaptive nature of IREAD adjusts based on student responses, providing an accurate measure of reading abilities. After the test, families receive a detailed report of performance across categories such as Foundations and Vocabulary, Nonfiction, and Literature.

A score of 446 or higher is necessary for passing for both second and third graders. Students who pass demonstrate mastery of the expected reading skills by the end of third grade and will not need to retake the test. In contrast, a score below 446 results in "On Track" or "At Risk" proficiency levels for second graders but is considered "Did Not Pass" for third graders.

Starting in Spring 2025, all second-grade students must take IREAD regardless of special education status or English language proficiency. The same test is administered to both second and third graders. While some second graders may demonstrate these skills early, mastery by all at this stage isn't expected.

Promotion from second to third grade does not require passing IREAD; however, there are no Good Cause Exemptions (GCE) for second-grade students. Third-grade students must pass IREAD by the end of their grade year—including summer retests—to advance to fourth grade unless they qualify for an exemption under state law.

Students who do not meet expectations in spring have opportunities for additional support through summer programs and can retake the test during summer sessions. If a student fails the summer retest but qualifies for a GCE, they may still proceed to fourth grade but must continue testing until they pass or complete sixth grade.
