State Representative Chris May's resolution to honor the late Chief of Police Vern Ervin has successfully passed through the House. The resolution proposes renaming a section of State Road 56 near French Lick in memory of Chief Ervin, who was killed on September 10, 1972. He died while responding to an incident involving a man with a gun at a service station in French Lick.
Chief Ervin left behind his wife, son, two daughters, three grandsons, and five siblings. The suspect involved in the incident was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment, where he later died from natural causes in 1981.
Rep. May expressed hope that this gesture would serve as "a reminder of Chief Ervin's sacrifice to his community" and acknowledge "the dedication that those in blue display each and every day to keep us safe." By renaming part of the road after him, Rep. May believes it will ensure that Chief Ervin's legacy endures within the community he served.
Ervin had a notable career with the French Lick Police Department for 16 years and also spent one year with the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Additionally, he was an Army veteran who served during World War II.
The House Concurrent Resolution 8 will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation. Should it pass through the Indiana General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Transportation will be authorized to implement the renaming project.
