Brookside School 54 has become a center for creativity and learning through an innovative literacy program that encourages students to write and publish their own books. Fifth-grader Emam Shelton authored "The Best Principal," a tribute to the school's new principal, Shawna Lipscomb, who took on the role this fall.
Shelton expressed her admiration for Lipscomb, saying, “She is so nice, and I think she is the best principal. She always makes sure we have a good day and does a great job at being the principal.”
Lipscomb was moved by Shelton's gesture. “Having a student write a book about me means the world to me,” she said. “It’s one of those rare, heartfelt moments that reminds me why I love what I do.”
In addition to Shelton's work, Lipscomb also published her own book titled "The Brookside Adventure." The book aims to highlight the unique experiences that make Brookside special and inspire students to take pride in their school community.
These efforts are part of the Literacy, Entrepreneurship, and Dreams program initiated by Tevin Studdard, an Indianapolis Public Schools graduate. Through this program, students collaborate with mentors over several months to create books available on Amazon. This initiative aims to enhance literacy skills while allowing students to express their perspectives.
“The lack of literacy is an issue across this country–not just here in Indianapolis,” Lipscomb noted. “This project has made a world of difference for so many youngsters in our building.”
