In a recent spotlight by Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), Jessica Barnes, an Administrator on Special Assignment at Ernie Pyle School 90, shared her professional journey and experiences. With a career spanning 25 years in IPS, Barnes has served as a teacher for 15 years, an instructional coach for two years, and an administrator for the past eight years.
Barnes initially pursued theology before transitioning to education. She was part of Indiana University’s first transition to teaching program, earning her master's degree in elementary education. Her teaching career began in North Carolina before she moved back to Indiana and joined IPS.
Reflecting on her choice to work with IPS, Barnes said, "I love the families, the staff, and the community of Indianapolis. Our IPS community has a heart and passion for educating ALL children." Her background includes working in rural schools in North Carolina before experiencing the larger urban district environment at IPS.
Education holds significant importance for Barnes due to her family's history in teaching. Despite initial resistance to following their path, she found her calling in helping children achieve their potential. "Being an educator is not only my profession but also my identity," she expressed.
One of Barnes' most rewarding experiences is watching students understand new concepts. Having spent significant time teaching first grade or kindergarten, she finds particular joy in helping children learn to read.
Barnes approaches each day as a new opportunity and emphasizes creating a positive environment despite external negativity. "For us to maintain that positive environment, self-care is very important," she stated.
To new educators or staff joining IPS, Barnes advises recognizing their role's importance within the district's success: "No matter what your role is in the district, you are important to the success of our students."
