Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) launched its Unified Student Supports (USS) ConnectED series today, aiming to enhance the skills of special education staff. The initiative seeks to address the growing need for qualified special educators and emphasizes an inclusive educational environment.
Cortnei Flucas, USS officer, highlighted the importance of this effort: “In a time when the demand for qualified special educators is critical, this initiative underscores our commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.”
The first conference took place at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel at Keystone Crossing. The series will continue on February 18 and March 31, focusing on professional development for IPS special educators and equity advocates. Today's session included workshops and discussions on best practices in special education.
Flucas added, “Our special educators are vital to the success of our students with diverse needs. By investing in their professional growth, we are not only acknowledging their invaluable contributions but also ensuring they have the tools necessary to make a lasting impact on the lives of our students and their families.”
Participants were encouraged to engage actively by proposing session ideas, facilitating workshops, or recognizing colleagues' efforts in advancing special education. This collaborative approach highlights community involvement and shared knowledge as key components in improving education quality.
Lisa Rossell, executive director of Special Education, stated: “Together, we are creating a culture of support and innovation that empowers our educators and enriches our students’ learning experiences. We can’t wait to CONNECT with our educators and elevate our impact together!”
