State Representative Jim Lucas of Seymour recently engaged with local public safety officials to understand their needs before the upcoming legislative session. As a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, Lucas met with several key figures including Seymour Police Chief Greg O'Brien, staff from Jackson County Emergency Medical Service, officials from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, and Seymour Fire Department Fire Chief Eric Roll.

Lucas emphasized the importance of these meetings, stating, "It is so important to meet with community officials, who really have their ear to the ground on local issues." He noted that such discussions are valuable for exchanging ideas and assessing what state policies are effective or need improvement.

During his visit, Lucas explored ways to support public safety officials and address local safety concerns. Previously, he authored legislation recognizing Hoosier first responders injured or killed in service. This initiative was inspired by feedback from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department regarding the lack of state recognition for such sacrifices.

The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor was established to honor those who display exceptional bravery at personal risk beyond duty requirements. "This is one of my most meaningful pieces of legislation that I've authored in the General Assembly," Lucas remarked. The award aims to ensure that the sacrifices made by first responders are remembered.

Eligibility for this award includes Indiana first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS workers, and others involved in rapid emergency response. Further information on nominations can be found through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website.

Lucas represents House District 69 which covers parts of Bartholomew, Jackson, Scott, and Washington counties.
