Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) will participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by encouraging the entire district to wear pink on Wednesday, October 30. The initiative aims to promote awareness about breast health and early detection.

Annamarie Byers, Senior Coordinator for the IPS Office of Racial Equity and Inclusion, is leading this effort. "We’re wearing pink for breast cancer awareness," Byers stated. "The pink ribbon has become a powerful symbol, and just seeing it can remind people to stay aware, take action, and support others."

Breast cancer statistics indicate that one in eight women in the U.S. will be affected by the disease. In 2024 alone, over 310,000 women and 2,800 men are expected to receive a diagnosis. However, early detection significantly improves outcomes; the survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99 percent.

Byers further emphasized community involvement: "We encourage everyone in the IPS community to wear pink on October 30 and help spread awareness," she said. "Whether through pink-themed events, sharing health information, or supporting breast cancer research, we can make a meaningful difference together. Let’s stand united as we honor survivors and remember those we’ve lost."

IPS also encourages schools within its district to share information on social media platforms and support relevant charities as part of their participation.
