In a recent interview, Melody Coryell, the Executive Director of Postsecondary Readiness at Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), shared insights into her career and motivations. As she begins her tenth year with IPS, Coryell reflects on her commitment to providing students with access to quality educational programs that prepare them for future opportunities.

Coryell's journey in education began early. She was accepted into a gifted program in Kokomo, Indiana, during second grade, which opened her eyes to the transformative power of education. This experience highlighted the importance of equity and access in education for her.

Before joining IPS, Coryell worked in professional development at IUPUI and served as an International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator and English teacher at Lawrence North High School. Her academic credentials include dual bachelor's degrees from Ball State University, a teaching degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, and an MFA from Butler University. She is currently pursuing an EdD in Educational Leadership from Indiana University.

Coryell's decision to work at IPS stems from her belief in public education and its mission. "I work in IPS because I believe in public education, because equity matters to me, and because I believe in our mission and vision," she stated.

Reflecting on her time at IPS compared to previous roles, Coryell noted the sense of teamwork within the district: "In IPS, I feel like I am part of a hardworking team that wants to serve all students well."

Education holds significant importance for Coryell due to its potential to open doors and address inequities. Her dedication is driven by the need for ongoing efforts to ensure all students have access to necessary learning resources.

One of Coryell's proudest achievements at IPS includes partnering with high schools to offer programs such as Indiana College Core and International Baccalaureate programming. These initiatives are supported by writing centers and Future Centers across district-managed high schools.

Coryell approaches her role with a focus on presence and collaboration: "My goal each day is to be present in the moment and strategic as problems arise." She credits her motivation to the collective efforts of her teammates working towards common goals.

For new educators or staff members joining IPS, Coryell advises building connections beyond their immediate teams: "Get to know your teammates... there is an IPS graduate who works as a nurse in my doctor’s office. When she found out I was an IPS teacher, she said, 'Then I know you’re a good person.'"
