Greenfield's Benny Joel Eaton and Wilkinson's Larry Loveall were among 17 older Indiana residents honored with this year's Golden Hoosier Award for their volunteer service in their community, according to State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield).

Cherry recently joined Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and leaders from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration's Division of Aging to help present the awards during a ceremony at the Statehouse.

"These award recipients have dedicated their time to improving our communities and the lives of others," Cherry said. "Our state relies on individuals like these to keep charities and local organizations thriving. I'm honored to recognize Benny and Larry for all their contributions."

Since moving to Greenfield in the early 1970s, Eaton volunteered many hours and raised thousands of dollars for those in need through a variety of local organizations. He served as president and vice president on the Greenfield Sertoma Club, worked for the revitalization of the Nameless Creek Youth Camp, helped establish the Weston Elementary School outdoor classroom, and created an annual five-day youth camp called PIN (Plug Into Nature) Camp.

Loveall is president of Knightstown Kids Inc., a youth soccer league, and has coached soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball. He served on the Boy Scouts Council for five years and works closely with Civic Cheer Guild of Knightstown to support children and families. Loveall maintained the Knightstown Walking Trail for five years through planting, mowing, and trimming. He also maintains the original 1936 floor of the Hoosier Gym and leads fundraisers for any needed repairs.

The Golden Hoosier Award was established in 2008 to honor older Hoosiers whose volunteer work has made a positive impact on their communities. To be eligible, nominees must be aged 65 or older, an Indiana resident, and have volunteered for at least three years. More than 200 citizens have received this award since its inception.
