In the latest edition of IPS Employee Spotlight, Jordan Leonard, District Athletic Coordinator, shares his journey and insights into the operations of Indianapolis Public Schools' athletic programs. Leonard is a licensed physical education teacher with a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and recently completed his master’s degree in Urban Education Leadership at Indiana University Indianapolis. He is also a licensed building-level administrator.

Leonard has been with IPS for nine years, serving as the District Athletic Coordinator for the past two years. Prior to this role, he spent seven years at Benjamin Harrison School 2 as the Physical Education Teacher and Athletic Coordinator.

When asked about his current roles and responsibilities, Leonard said: "In my current role as the IPS District Athletic Coordinator, I support all athletic programming from the district’s main office, working to ensure quality and equitable athletic opportunities for our students."

Leonard's motivation to work at IPS stems from his commitment to urban education. "Both my undergraduate and graduate work centered around urban education and ensuring that all students receive an equitable education," he explained. "I believe Indianapolis Public Schools is committed to this goal, and I am honored to serve the students of IPS."

He emphasized the importance of education in opening doors to endless possibilities: "Quality education opens the door to endless possibilities. We are lifelong learners who should continuously seek to improve."

Leonard shared several rewarding moments during his tenure at IPS. One notable experience was implementing restorative circles at Center for Inquiry 2. A parent later approached him at a sporting event asking if he would facilitate a restorative circle for her family because her son spoke highly of their impact.

He also recounted chaperoning trips that expanded students' learning outside the classroom: "We took about 25 middle school students to explore the rainforest, kayak, practice Spanish, try new foods, and visit local schools—creating lifelong memories." Another highlight was being named Benjamin Harrison School 2 Teacher of the Year.

Regarding daily motivation and effectiveness in his job, Leonard stated: "It’s easy to stay motivated when you truly believe in the work you’re doing. If I ever feel myself wavering, all I have to do is attend one of the many athletic events and see the joy we bring."

For new educators or staff members joining IPS, Leonard advised focusing on relationships: "Everything in education begins and ends with relationships. Building strong relationships with all stakeholders is key to creating a strong culture and community."
