State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) recently presented a proposal to rename a bridge on SR 67 after fallen Lance Cpl. Andrew Whitacre during the Interim Study Committee on Roads and Transportation meeting.

Whitacre, 21, was a native of Bryant and graduated from Jay County High School in 2005 before joining the U.S. Marines. He was killed in combat in June 2008 in Afghanistan. Prescott said he would like to rename the bridge near the high school after Whitacre to honor his service and sacrifice. The interim study committee is reviewing the proposal, which marks the first step in the road renaming process.

"As we honor the life and sacrifice of Lance Cpl. Andrew Whitacre, we are reminded of the profound courage and dedication he displayed while protecting our nation," Prescott said. "Naming this bridge in his honor would be a tribute to him and ensure that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations."

Whitacre served in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq and Afghanistan. Whitacre also supported Operation Enduring Freedom and helped train the Afghan National Police.

Once the proposal is approved by the interim committee, Prescott will file a formal resolution for consideration and adoption by the Indiana House and Senate during the 2025 legislative session. If the resolution passes through the Indiana General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Transportation can move forward with the project.
