The Murtaugh Farm in Dearborn County has been awarded the Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award for its continuous operation since 1855, according to State Rep. Randy Lyness (R-West Harrison) and State Sen. Randy Maxwell (R-Guilford).
"Farming is one of the cultural and economic cornerstones of rural Indiana, and it is thanks to these families and other Hoosier homesteaders that this tradition continues," Lyness stated. "I look forward to seeing the next generation of Hoosiers succeed and carry on their family's legacy."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, or 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Indiana is one of the top agricultural states in the nation thanks to the commitment of farms like the Murtaugh Farm," Maxwell remarked. "I am proud to represent hardworking farmers who are committed to passing down their family's legacy to the next generation."
This farm family was among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since establishing the award in 1976.
More information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program and how to nominate a farm can be found at in.gov/isda. Nominations for the March 2025 ceremony are due by Nov. 1.
