The Michalski Farm in St. Joseph County recently received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award for being in operation since 1887, according to State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty) and State Sen. David Niezgodski (D-South Bend).
"Agriculture is an integral part of our state's economic success and families like this help keep farming traditions alive and well," Teshka said. "The impact longstanding homesteads have on our state and local communities is tremendous, and I wish the Michalski family all the best."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"The Michalski family's commitment to farming for over a century is truly remarkable," Niezgodski said. "Their dedication and hard work have not only sustained their farm but have also contributed to the rich agricultural heritage of our state. It is families like the Michalskis that embody the spirit of perseverance and community that we hold dear in Indiana."
This farm family was among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
