Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) officials gathered today to break ground on extensive renovations and new facilities at T.C. Howe Middle School. This event marks the seventh groundbreaking this year as part of the district's Rebuilding Stronger plan. T.C. Howe is one of 23 schools undergoing renovations in 2024, supported by the Indianapolis community.
In May 2023, voters supported the district’s Rebuilding Stronger Capital Referendum, providing $410 million in taxpayer dollars to transform IPS school buildings and expand academic and athletic offerings.
“On behalf of our teachers, families, and students at T.C. Howe, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire Indianapolis community,” said T.C. Howe Middle School Principal Frances Rivera. “You are the reason we are standing here today celebrating the kickoff of these construction projects. Parents and teachers know that education is the best investment there is — and we’re so excited to show your dollars at work delivering rigorous academic curriculum and competitive athletics programs for our students.”
The renovations at T.C. Howe will be managed by Indianapolis-based architecture firm J.S. Held and are scheduled to begin in Fall 2023, with completion expected by Summer 2024. Throughout this period, the school will continue its operations with IPS committed to minimizing disruptions and ensuring safety for all stakeholders.
“I know there was a time when some families felt like IPS was the default option or their only option rather than their best option,” said IPS Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson. “But everyone standing beside me today — IPS teachers, principals, coaches — we want you to feel great about where your kids go to school. We are working hard to make our schools feel the way you dream about a school feeling — and we invite you to watch us work.”
During the groundbreaking ceremonies, IPS officials also announced a significant investment in employee health and wellness with the upcoming myIPS Employee & Family Clinic at Howe in partnership with Ascension St. Vincent. The clinic is scheduled to open in Fall 2024 inside Howe.
