WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators across party lines have come together to urge President Joe Biden to take action in filling vacancies on the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) to ensure the protection of American businesses and workers.

In a joint letter, Senators Todd Young, Joe Manchin, Shelley Moore Capito, Sherrod Brown, Bob Casey, Ted Budd, and Mike Rounds emphasized the importance of having a fully-staffed ITC to safeguard American interests in trade. They highlighted that the current vacancies and expired terms at the ITC are hindering its ability to carry out its duties effectively.

"Personnel is policy, and we look forward to working with you to nominate and confirm qualified individuals to the ITC as quickly as possible," the senators wrote, stressing the urgency of the situation.

The senators also made reference to the historical context of the ITC's establishment, citing President Woodrow Wilson's vision in 1916. President Wilson believed that an impartial board like the ITC was essential for the U.S. to maintain its economic leadership globally.

Highlighting the need for fair competition in crucial economic sectors, the senators reiterated the importance of appointing suitable candidates to the ITC. They emphasized that a fully-staffed commission is crucial for providing protection to American industries against illegal foreign trade practices.

The joint letter concluded with a message of appreciation for President Biden's attention to this critical issue and an expression of eagerness for a prompt response.

The call from the senators underscores the bipartisan concern for the wellbeing of American businesses and the importance of a functional ITC in shaping and implementing U.S. trade policies.
