FREE Milkweed Seeds at Lawrence Government Center

FREE Milkweed Seeds at Lawrence Government Center

Lawrence citizens can help the monarch butterfly population by picking up FREE Milkweed seeds from the Government Center and planting them this winter (best time to plant is between November and January.) The milkweed plant is essential to monarch butterflies because it's their main source of food. The FREE seeds are available in the Parks Department office, 9001 E 59th St, Indianapolis, IN 46216, Suite 203.

The Lawrence Parks Department is using 5 acres of our city parks to help Monarch butterflies, too. With funding from the Lawrence Common Council, we planted native flowers, grasses, and lots of milkweed in Richardt Park, Lee Road Park, Louis J. Jenn Memorial Park, and Veterans' Memorial Park. These butterfly & pollinator gardens will take one more season to fully bloom. Liz Masur of the Lawrence Butterfly Project said, "The first year native plants sleep while they create deep roots. The next year, they'll be creeping. We'll see some flowers. And then, the third year, the flowers will leap."
