Welcome to the IPS Employee Spotlight, a feature showcasing individuals who impact the Indianapolis Public Schools district significantly. John Chambers, now in his seventh year with IPS, reflects on his commitment to fostering educational opportunities in his role as a professional learning coordinator.
Chambers' responsibility involves strategizing and leading professional development opportunities for Team IPS, including in-person and asynchronous learning sessions. Sharing his background, Chambers said, "Education has always been at the core of life’s adventures." His journey began with journalism, leading him to marketing, nonprofit work, and eventually to education. His passion for helping students grow led him to pursue a career in teaching.
When asked about his motivation for working at IPS, Chambers mentioned the importance of public education and his personal connection to the community. He affirmed, "This is my community, and our students will move Indianapolis into an even brighter future."
Chambers highlighted the collaborative environment at IPS, noting, "Educators are dreamers. When a colleague has had a dream or an idea to move the district forward, I have seen others move mountains to make it possible."
He shared a rewarding experience of leading the "Change Makers" cohort, a group of educators working on year-long projects to instigate meaningful change within the schools. Chambers expressed his satisfaction, stating, "It is rewarding to see them look back on past hurdles and the waves of change they have made within projects."
Discussing his daily approach, he emphasized flexibility and balance, revealing, "Each day takes flexibility, an openness to change as priorities shift, compassionate accountability and balance."
Regarding the "Rebuilding Stronger" initiative, Chambers pointed to its student-centered focus as a significant strength. He remarked, "This focus will make us a more equitable, effective and responsive district."
For newcomers to IPS, Chambers advised, "Consider kindness and an openness to new experiences and connections within and outside your school."
