Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is spotlighting its alumni to celebrate their achievements and experiences. William Holifield, a 1983 graduate of John Marshall High School, shared insights into how his education at IPS influenced his life.
Holifield's journey began in the largest school district in Indiana, where he attended from kindergarten through high school. Reflecting on his early education, he said, "I was in first grade when Billie Breaux set me up for success." He noted that Breaux taught him valuable life lessons such as tying Windsor knots and staying focused. These lessons left a lasting impact on him, shaping his approach to life's challenges.
Holifield also expressed gratitude towards Cindy Smith (now Cindy Hartshorn), under whose leadership he participated in the show choir "The Sons of Liberty" at John Marshall High School. He credited her with teaching him about business management and having a significant influence on his development.
After high school, Holifield attended Indiana State University before securing a job with General Motors. He is currently employed at Univar Solutions as a tank farm employee. Beyond his professional career, he has remained active in music as both a performer and sound technician.
Regarding challenges faced during his time at IPS, Holifield mentioned being one of five black families in his neighborhood: "I don’t think we overcame it. I think we just adjusted to it and tried to learn from it."
To stay connected with the IPS community, Holifield joined the Alumni Council despite living out of district. This involvement allows him to maintain ties with classmates and friends from various schools within IPS.
