Michael McFadden, the Elementary English Language Arts District Coordinator for Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), shares insights into his career in education. McFadden has spent over 20 years with IPS, holding various roles such as classroom teacher, instructional coach, interventionist, and district coordinator.
His commitment to urban education is driven by a desire to provide students with the best educational experience possible. "I am very committed to serving the students of Indianapolis Public Schools because they deserve the absolute best educational experience," he states.
McFadden emphasizes the support he receives at IPS, allowing him to bring his authentic self to work daily. Reflecting on his motivation for pursuing a teaching career, he recalls feeling unsupported as a child in school. This inspired him to become a teacher who could reach students like himself.
One of McFadden's notable achievements includes receiving the Lily Teacher Creativity Fellowship, which enabled him to travel to Argentina and improve his Spanish fluency. The experience offered him insight into what many students face when new to the United States.
He approaches his role by remembering his time as a classroom teacher and aims to support current teachers effectively. Regarding IPS's Rebuilding Stronger initiative, McFadden sees it as an opportunity to provide quality education regardless of location. He believes that focusing on educating the whole child will help create future leaders.
For new educators joining IPS, McFadden advises finding joy even on challenging days and recognizing the rewarding nature of their work: "At the end of each day, find the thing that brought you joy."
