Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) recently highlighted Marveda Saunders, a 1986 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School, in their Alumni Spotlight series. This initiative celebrates former students and their unique journeys after graduation.
Saunders pursued education at Tennessee State University but later found her passion in law enforcement. She is now nearing the completion of a degree in criminal justice and works as a detective for the IPS Police Department, focusing on student and staff safety.
Reflecting on her time at IPS, Saunders said, "As a proud alum of ATHS, I am honored to say that I was a member of the basketball team, volleyball team, track and field, tennis team, and ROTC Drill Team for four years. ATHS taught me how to be a leader, a team player, to be committed... I believe because of my education at ATHS, I have been taught to be tough and resilient."
She also credited her ROTC instructors for teaching her leadership skills: "I graduated from ATHS as a Lieutenant Colonel," she shared proudly.
Saunders emphasized the role IPS played in her development by offering opportunities for improvement through training. A significant achievement was completing an instructor's course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy: "I’m so proud to say I successfully completed the course and am now an instructor for IPS Police."
Remaining connected with IPS through alumni meetings and events has been important for Saunders. She advised current students to engage with these opportunities for future success.
In addition to attending events, Saunders has participated in fundraising initiatives aimed at providing scholarships for current students.
