State Rep. Joanna King has honored Vince Turner with the Heart of a Hoosier Award in recognition of his induction into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame. The award was presented to Turner, who hails from Goshen, for his long-standing contributions to sports journalism in Elkhart County.
Turner's career began as a writer for the Elkhart Truth from 1977 to 1985, after which he became the sports director at WTRC radio until 1998. During his tenure, he provided coverage of high school football and basketball games as well as Notre Dame basketball.
"Vince has passionately served our area for over 20 years covering Elkhart County sports through writing and broadcasting," said King. "He spent countless hours keeping our community informed about local athletes and sports teams. Vince certainly has a heart of a Hoosier, and I congratulate him on this outstanding achievement of making it into the hall of fame."
Throughout his career, Turner received several accolades including the Associated Press' "Best Sportswriting" award in 1981 and honors from the Indiana High School Baseball and Wrestling Coaches associations. He also earned 22 AP and UPI broadcast honors for various aspects of sports journalism and was awarded the IHSAA Media Award in 1997. His work extended to contributions for Blue & Gold Illustrated, Indiana Sports Weekly, AP Radio Sports, NBC Radio Sports, and WFAN in New York.
Currently, Turner continues to serve the community as a communications specialist for the Goshen Chamber of Commerce and hosts the Sounds of Goshen podcast. He is also known for his advocacy work with the Boys and Girls Club of Elkhart County.
The Heart of a Hoosier Award was established by King in 2022 to honor individuals and businesses that demonstrate kindness, courage, thoughtfulness, and transformative involvement within House District 49.
